Recently I was invited to speak to a local group about writing a newsletter.
What persuaded me was the audience itself. What I didn’t expect was to come away with some of the best retirement advice I’ve ever heard.
The group was made up almost entirely of retirees, many of them older than me, with ages ranging from their early sixties into their eighties.
Sitting there, listening to their stories, I realised something interesting. Despite being seven years into retirement myself, I still felt like a beginner compared to many of them.
I agreed to the talk on one condition.
I wanted to hear what people had learned after years, sometimes decades, of living this stage of life.
What followed was far more insightful than I expected.
Yes, there was some predictable advice about keeping active and staying positive.
But underneath that were deeper, quieter observations. The kind of wisdom that usually only appears after people have had enough time to stop pretending and speak honestly.
These were some of the best insights I heard.
1. Learn to match your lifestyle with your finances
Several retirees said the happiest people they knew were not necessarily the wealthiest, but the ones who learned to align their expectations with their resources.
Retirement becomes much calmer when your spending habits and lifestyle choices stop fighting reality.
This doesn’t mean deprivation. In fact, many people spoke about feeling freer once they stopped comparing themselves to others and built a version of retirement that genuinely suited them.
There is enormous peace in wanting less than you can afford rather than constantly stretching for more.
2. Look after your health and energy like they are assets
One retiree in his late seventies said something I wrote down immediately:
“Your energy becomes more important than your schedule.”
That stayed with me.
Health in retirement is not simply about avoiding illness. It determines how much life you can still participate in. Your ability to travel, socialise, create, help others, and remain independent all rests on the foundation of physical and mental energy.
Many retirees regretted postponing fitness until after they stopped working, assuming they would simply “have more time later.”
The consistent message was simple. Protect your health early because retirement is much easier to enjoy when your body can still support the life you want to live.
3. Learn to feel comfortable spending your money
One woman laughed as she said:
“You don’t want to become the richest person in the graveyard.”
Beneath the humour was a serious point.
Many retirees spend decades training themselves to save, delay gratification, and prioritise the future. The problem is that those habits don’t automatically disappear once retirement arrives.
Several people admitted they struggled emotionally with spending money even when they were financially secure.
Over time, many realised that retirement money is not simply there to preserve. It is there to support experiences, ease, health, connection, and quality of life.
Saving gave them freedom. Spending thoughtfully allowed them to actually experience it.
4. You do not need to stay busy — you need to stay engaged
This distinction came up repeatedly.
Busyness and engagement are not the same thing.
Some retirees filled every hour with committees, errands, volunteering, or endless obligations, only to discover they had recreated the same exhaustion they once hoped retirement would escape.
Others described a quieter but deeper kind of fulfilment. Meaningful conversations, creative projects, learning, walking, gardening, mentoring, or simply feeling mentally involved in life.
The happiest retirees did not necessarily have the fullest calendars.
They had lives that still felt emotionally connected and mentally alive.
5. The first few years shape more than you realise
Many people said their early retirement habits became their long-term lifestyle, often without them noticing.
If they withdrew socially early on, it became harder to reconnect later.
If they became inactive physically, restarting felt increasingly difficult.
If they developed healthy rhythms early, those routines often carried them forward for years.
Several retirees described the first two or three years as a critical adjustment window.
Not because you need to get retirement perfect immediately, but because small repeated behaviours quietly compound over time.
6. Motivation usually arrives after action, not before it
This advice surprised me because it came up so often.
A number of retirees admitted they spent months waiting to feel motivated before starting something new, whether exercise, travel, hobbies, volunteering, or social activities.
But many eventually realised motivation rarely appears first.
Action creates momentum. Momentum creates motivation.
One retiree described it perfectly:
“The hardest part was putting my shoes on and leaving the house. After that, I was usually glad I did.”
Retirement offers freedom, but freedom can easily drift into passivity if you wait endlessly for inspiration.
7. Expect your sense of purpose to evolve
One of the most reassuring insights was hearing how many people’s sense of purpose changed multiple times throughout retirement.
Purpose was rarely a single discovery.
For some, it began with travel and freedom. Later it shifted toward family. Then creativity. Then mentoring. Then community. Then personal growth.
Several people said they initially panicked when an old source of meaning faded, assuming they had somehow “lost purpose.”
But retirement seems to work differently.
Meaning often evolves in seasons rather than remaining fixed.
The retirees who adjusted best were usually the ones who stayed open to new versions of themselves emerging over time.
8. Family alone cannot carry an entire retirement
Almost everyone valued family deeply, but many people warned against building your entire retirement identity around children or grandchildren.
Family provides love and connection, but it cannot fully replace structure, friendships, personal interests, and independent meaning.
Several retirees admitted they expected far more family interaction than realistically happened. Adult children remained busy with their own lives, careers, and responsibilities.
The healthiest retirees seemed to maintain both strong family relationships and lives that still belonged partly to themselves.
9. Adjustment takes far longer than most people expect
This may have been the single most repeated point of the entire discussion.
People consistently underestimated how long retirement adjustment would take.
Not financially, but emotionally.
Many assumed they would feel settled within six months. Instead, some said it took two, three, or even five years before retirement truly felt natural.
Leaving work is not just a schedule change. It is an identity shift, a social shift, a psychological shift, and often a change in how you measure your value.
Several retirees said they wished someone had warned them that feeling slightly disoriented for a while was completely normal.
10. Be careful not to slowly lower your standards for effort
One retiree put this bluntly:
“If you stop expecting things from yourself, life slowly shrinks.”
That comment stayed with me.
A subtle risk in retirement is gradually doing less simply because you can. Less movement. Less challenge. Less initiative. Less effort.
At first it feels relaxing. Over time it can quietly affect confidence, energy, discipline, and even identity.
The retirees who seemed most energised were not necessarily the busiest. But they still expected engagement from themselves. They still maintained standards, routines, and small personal challenges.
11. Expect your social world to change
Retirement reshapes friendships in ways many people do not anticipate.
Some work friendships faded surprisingly quickly once the workplace disappeared. Other relationships deepened. New friendships formed in unexpected places.
Several retirees said they became more intentional about choosing relationships based on shared values and energy rather than convenience or history.
There was also a growing appreciation for smaller but more meaningful circles.
One person said:
“In retirement, you stop collecting acquaintances and start valuing real connection.”
12. Adaptability matters more than the perfect plan
Many retirees entered retirement with carefully imagined visions of how life would unfold.
Then life changed.
Health shifted. Family needs evolved. Interests changed. Circumstances changed. Priorities changed.
The retirees who seemed happiest were rarely the ones with the most detailed original plan.
They were the ones most willing to adapt without seeing adaptation as failure.
Retirement rewards flexibility far more than rigid expectations.
13. Keep a reason to leave the house
This advice sounded almost too simple at first, but the more people explained it, the more important it seemed.
Without work, days can slowly become smaller and more inward-looking if you are not careful.
A regular reason to leave the house, even something small, helps maintain rhythm, movement, conversation, confidence, and connection to the wider world.
Coffee shops. Walks. Classes. Volunteering. Gym sessions. Markets. Libraries. Lunch with friends.
The activity itself mattered less than remaining physically and psychologically engaged with life outside your own walls.
14. Stay open to changing direction completely
One of the most hopeful themes from the discussion was how many people completely reinvented aspects of their lives later than they ever imagined possible.
Some moved countries. Some started businesses. Some became artists. Some returned to education. Some discovered entirely new identities they never expected.
A surprising number said their original retirement plan ended up being temporary.
The lesson was not that you need constant reinvention.
It was that retirement remains a living stage of life, not a finished one.
You are still allowed to change.
A final thought
The most valuable thing I took away from that conversation was this.
Retirement is not solved once and then completed.
It is adjusted continuously.
The people who seemed happiest were not necessarily the wealthiest, busiest, or most accomplished. They were the ones who stayed curious, adaptable, engaged, and willing to keep evolving.
Perhaps that is the real task of retirement.
Not simply learning how to stop working, but learning how to keep growing once work is no longer organising your life.
So much wisdom in that room. It’s nice to hear the thoughts from people that are 10,20 or I guess even 30 years in to retirement. So much of what we read is from people in the very early stages and those initial transition years. I bet you’re pleased you did that talk.

As for the list itself, super valuable advice and lessons learned for anyone thinking about retirement, recently retired, or still figuring retirement out.
For me, putting on shoes and leaving the house is probably the line that sticks with me the most.
